The first useful question is not “Is my Thai degree recognised in Germany?” It is “What exact work do I intend to do, under what title, and in which federal state?” German procedures attach to an occupation and legal purpose.
Regulated occupations
In a regulated profession, legal rules require particular qualifications or permission before a person can practise or use a protected professional title. Many healthcare professions fall into this category. Teachers in state schools, certain legal professions and some skilled trades can also face specific rules.
Recognition may therefore be essential, but it is rarely the only condition. German language evidence, health suitability, reliability or professional registration can appear alongside qualification equivalence.
Non-regulated occupations
Many occupations are not regulated. An employer may assess whether your experience fits the role, and formal recognition might not be legally required to perform the work. However, an official recognition outcome can still matter for an immigration route, salary classification or employer confidence.
Titles can matter
A role’s everyday English label may not match the legally relevant German title. Engineering work, for example, must be distinguished from rules governing use of a protected engineer title. Avoid choosing a procedure from a loose translation alone.
A reliable checking sequence
- Record the employer’s exact role and duties.
- Identify the German occupation that most closely corresponds.
- Select the intended federal state.
- Use an official federal recognition resource to locate the competent authority.
- Ask that authority to confirm the procedure where your facts remain unclear.
This sequence prevents an attractive but irrelevant document checklist from becoming your working plan.
